More power available. introductionwhen it debuted as a 2005 model, the chrysler 300 revived the long-dormant tradition of the full-size, high-style american performance car. While a 2. 7-liter v6 was standard, and a 3. 5-liter v6 optional, the engine that grabbed the headlines was the top-tier 5. 7-liter hemi v8 developing 340 horsepower. the 300's namesake and inspiration, the original chrysler c-300 of 1955, was one of the defining members of the big-muscle breed, powered by the original edition of chrysler's famous hemispherical-head v8 known as the hemi. It won the nascar championship in its first year out, and set top speed records on the beach at daytona. later 300s featured bigger hemi engines and better-handling chassis. And now chrysler is following this tradition, too. The instrument panel and switchgear are easy to read and operate. Pieces of mercedes-benz are slipping into chrysler cars nowadays, and the 300c features a mercedes-like steering wheel, leather under an arc of wood at the top. a chrysler 300 with a 2. 7-liter v6 retailed for the low price of $24,450 including destination. It's a large, modern, stylish, comfortable car for a small price. The 340-hp hemi has to carry 4046 pounds, so it won't run with a corvette, but it is plenty fast, with a 0-60 time of 6. 3 seconds, according to chrysler. At the same time, the ride is smooth, solid and comfortable and the cabin is very quiet. With a base price of $34,400, it's a deal. along with the new dodge charger, the 300 is the first big, rear-wheel-drive sedan to come out of chrysler in many years, replacing the front-wheel-drive lh line which, in one form or another, had served chrysler since 1993. Back then, there were engineering cases for front-wheel drive, including reduced manufacturing costs and more efficient packaging. But the way chrysler sees it, more prosperous times call for more performance-oriented cars, and rear-wheel drive remains much better than front-wheel drive for managing horsepower. new technology has also helped the case for rear-wheel drive. Traction control, electronic stability programs, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake distribution all improve the driver's ability to control the car. One of the most oft-touted advantages of front-wheel drive is traction in snow, but that too has been erased over the years. This is a true high-performance sedan, in the mode of bmw's m models or mercedes' amg brand, and it features loads of performance tweaks, unique design features and most of the luxury gear. The srt8's centerpiece is a 425-hp, 6. 1-liter hemi v8. stand-alone options include front and rear curtain airbags, boston acoustics premium sound system, air filtration, ultrasonic rear object detection, self-sealing tires, hands-free cellphone capability, power adjustable pedals, premium sound system, gps navigation system, sirius satellite radio, sunroof, walnut interior accents and xenon high-intensity headlamps. Higher-level models can be ordered with a dvd entertainment system integrated into the center console. walkaroundthe chrysler 300 is clearly bold and, we would argue, cool. But mostly the styling is uncompromising and makes no apologies. Rear-wheel-drive architecture allowed this whole new shape. The wheelwell cutouts, wrapping around 17 or 18-inch wheels, are striking. The wheelbase is long for a modern car at 120 inches (the 1955 original stretched 126), but the overhangs are short, offering a visual sense of power. The roof rakes thickly down to a short deck, and the sides are like large slabs. The long hood glides forward and drops off a cliff whose face is the massive grille, so strong it dictates the car's lines. the high-performance srt8 may be the coolest-looking 300 of all. Yet the coolest thing about the srt8 might be its 20-inch, forged aluminum wheels and asymmetrical high-performance tires. These maximize that visual power, and they're staggered in the classic track-performance tradition, with the rear tires slightly wider than the fronts. interiorthe interior of the chrysler 300 is marked by spacious silence. Chrysler engineers have been reducing interior and wind noise with all their new vehicles, so it's not surprising that the flagship sedan should get the treatment. Chrysler has its own $36 million aero-acoustic wind tunnel, and they've been trying to get their money's worth out of it. the cabin is roomy, thanks largely to the efficient shape of the exterior: the chassis is pushed out to the wheels, and the wheelbase is long, leaving 106. 6 cubic feet (sae standard) inside. The door openings are extra large, making climbing in and out noticeably easier and more pleasant. it's a very clean cockpit. Retrowagon, and gangster convertible. introductionthe chrysler pt cruiser combines the retro look of late-'30s american iron with modern performance, efficiency and features. The pt cruiser comes in two body styles, a versatile five-door model and a not-so-versatile two-door convertible. after a significant facelift for 2006, the 2007 chrysler pt cruiser remains relatively the same with a few additions to colors and features. New for 2007 are a few additional exterior colors and features, including a now-standard remote keyless entry on the base model and a standard console flood lamp on all models. The power liftgate comes standard for 2007. the five-door model's tall body boasts lots of room for people and cargo. In fact, its interior volume and versatility compare well to a small suv. Yet the pt cruiser is small and easy to park. it's also easy on gas. The lower-level models are competitively priced, and we think they make the most sense. Turbocharged models put fire under the hood, but they're pricey. the pt cruiser convertible is one of the least expensive convertibles on the market. Its trunk is tiny and awkward, however; in fact, we can't think of a trunk that's less convenient than the one on the cruiser convertible. the pt cruiser doesn't fit within existing automotive marketing segments, but competes on some levels with the chevy hhr, the scion xb, and the mini cooper. Like them, it is essentially a car: the pt cruiser is based on the dodge neon, a compact car noted for sprightly performance. So it drives like a car, though the handling is not as good. Cruiser is an appropriate name. lineupthe 2007 chrysler pt cruiser comes in two body styles: a five-door hatchback/wagon chrysler calls a sedan; and a two-door convertible. Both prices include automatic transmission; a manual gearbox is not available with this engine. The front belts have pyrotechnically charged tensioners, just like in luxury cars, to tighten the belts for the initial stages of an impact. The rear bench is equipped with child-seat tethers. walkaroundthe chrysler pt cruiser blends the retro look of a late-1930s or early 1940s american sedan with new-age styling cues such as dual-beam flush headlights and teardrop-shaped taillight lenses. the look was refined beginning with the 2006 models, but not drastically changed. The horizontal-themed grille does not extend below the bumper as on older models and it's topped by a prominent chrysler eagle and flanked by gently scalloped headlamps. Round foglights frame a horizontal slot in the bumper. Around back, a body-color spoiler on the liftgate is said to improve aerodynamic efficiency. in terms of exterior dimensions, the pt cruiser is quite compact. It's shorter in overall length than most compact sedans, but it's relatively tall. Measuring 63 inches from the pavement to the highest point of its roof, it's nearly as tall as a minivan. That height is a crucial element of the pt cruiser's design. the design of the convertible is quite a bit different from that of the sedan. The convertible looks shorter than the sedan, but it isn't; maybe it's the single long door on each side that creates this illusion. It's lower, however, by almost three inches, which certainly alters the looks. But there's a lot more to it than that: close examination reveals that the windshield is raked more radically and uses a different a-pillar design. with the top up, the convertible looks like a custom chopped-top hot rod. And it looks pretty cool. Drop the top and the gangstermobile turns into a chick car. With its top down, the pt cruiser convertible's high tail and integrated sport bar remind us of the old volkswagen cabrio. But where the vw's side windows sealed against its sport bar, the chrysler's windows seal against each other for a more modern convertible profile. Its slightly narrower and color-keyed sport bar sits behind the windows, inside the car, and is aerodynamically designed to minimize wind noise. A nice boot is provided that dresses up the appearance with the top down. interiorthe pt cruiser pulls its exterior styling themes into the cabin, although here, too, the retro theme is tempered a bit by a very modern-looking center stack that visually splits the vintage-styled dashboard. the driver faces three white-faced gauges set in individual cylinders, with speedometer center, tachometer right, and fuel and water temperature left. Accessory switches are concentrated in the center panel, with radial-type climate control dials at the bottom. Window switches are high in the center stack, inconvenient for quick operation, forcing the driver to search for them. The door levers have a nice action, and the switches operate with good tactile feel, though they're not world class. The standard stereo sounds tinny; we haven't tried the boston accoustics system. Also, there's a separate set button for the station presets, fussier than simply holding the preset down. a bonus of the cruiser's tall profile is its upright seating position, with a fairly high view ahead, somewhat like a sport-utility vehicle or minivan. The gt also features a leather wrapped steering wheel with satin-silver spokes, and bright accents on the pedals. the center console incorporates a sliding armrest, replacing the seat-mounted armrests provided previously. The pt's console also includes a covered tray for concealing small items, a storage bin that holds six cds, a coin holder and fold-out cup holders for rear-seat coffee consumers. A cell-phone charger is optional. roominess is a virtue in the cruiser.
