2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875. king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck. the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks. the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing. the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille. practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity. we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well. the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. It's capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used. Part of the reason for this is that the explorer benefits from a superb five-speed automatic transmission. safety features abound: anti-lock brakes come standard, and side-curtain air bags, designed to provide rollover protection, are optional and highly recommended. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability system is available for all xlt, eddie bauer, and limited models, providing improved traction and safety. The current model rides on a wider track and a longer wheelbase, giving it a more solid, more stable stance. However, we wish ford would have stitched leather all the way around to the inside edge of the seat bottom instead of using carpet there to save money. the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model. seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons that control them are mounted in an awkward location, on the sides of seats. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the seat-height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support. adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases. the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder. we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove. second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well. the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides. ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires. this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested. the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte. but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom. focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.' we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written. there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here. interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis. myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving. the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension.
